About Fairy Tales Retold
We are a children’s book publisher that retells classic fairy tales like Cinderella and Snow White for today’s children. With great attention to detail, we create hand-illustrated stories that preserve the magic of the originals, open up new perspectives, and challenge outdated gender roles.
The feedback? We’re bursting with pride, but read our customer reviews for yourself.
The First Impulse
Not too long ago, in a city you’ve most likely heard of—and may even have visited—a father who was approaching middle age and whose hairline was already receding lay in bed reading bedtime stories to his little daughter. As he lay there with the little girl in his arms, he noticed something strange.
It seemed as if all the princesses in these fairy tales had to be rescued, and as if their beauty were their most important characteristic.
The Origins
He didn't like that at all. He didn't want his daughter to grow up in a world like that. So, as he read aloud, he began making small changes here and there. Suddenly, a “beautiful” princess became a “brave” one, and he saw his daughter's eyes light up!
That's how the idea for “Fairy Tales Retold” came about—classic fairy tales, retold for the modern world!
The Founding of the Publishing House
Based in Berlin, we published our first book in 2019—a reimagining of “Snow White.” In July 2020, we released a coloring and craft book, and in September, we partnered with UBS to distribute some of our books to elementary schools in London.
In 2022, following a crowdfunding campaign, we published our second book, “Cinderella.” In 2024, we released our first “hidden object” book and published a revised reinterpretation of “Snow White” in English.
As a (tiny!) company, we try to do our small part to create better and more inclusive fairy tales, but we realize that we still have a long way to go and a lot of work ahead of us.
Old Fairy Tales with a New Twist
Our ideas about how best to design books have evolved since 2021. We now conduct extensive research on each title and collaborate with dozens of individuals and groups to gather feedback and new ideas. Through this process, we strive to ensure that our retellings are as engaging, inclusive, and inspiring as possible—even though we know there is still much work to be done.
We're always open to feedback, new opportunities, and ideas. If you'd like to work with us or have suggestions on how we can improve, we'd love to hear from you!
