Frequently Asked Questions
What does “retold” mean?
We don’t fundamentally change the fairy tales – we adapt them carefully. But it is precisely these small adjustments that, when taken together, make a big difference and demonstrate once again the power of every single word. The familiar structure of the fairy tales, as well as the well-known and beloved characters, remain intact – so that everyone immediately recognizes the stories despite the changes.
What age group are the books for?
Reading aloud is good for children of all ages. But based on our experience over the past few years, it’s mainly children between the ages of 4 and 9 who really soak up our retellings – the stories, the illustrations, and the themes behind them.
Children develop differently and at their own pace. Those who read earlier, read earlier. Those who prefer to listen, listen. Our books are designed for both.
Are the drawings real?
Yes, and you can tell just by looking at them. All the illustrations in our books and “hidden object” books are genuine watercolors, hand-painted and created in Italy.
We were fortunate enough to meet an exceptional illustrator at the start of the project: Claudia Piras. We’ve been working with her from the very beginning and have had the privilege of creating the visual world of our books together – a collaboration for which we are very grateful.
In our fairy tale books, you’ll find about 50 illustrations per book. Once we’ve decided what an illustration should look like, it takes two to three days to paint each one.
A single “hidden object” illustration takes five to seven days of pure painting work. For us, each of these illustrations is a little masterpiece(!) and we hope you can feel this.
Why “retold”?
Fairy tales have continually evolved over time and reflect the respective eras in which they were created. Many children and adults automatically associate Snow White or Cinderella with the Disney versions rather than with the original tales by the Brothers Grimm. The Grimms originally collected, revised, and wrote these fairy tales for adults, not for children. As a result, gender roles have been shaped over generations that are now outdated and often difficult for children to understand. Why is the stepmother always evil? Why is beauty valued above all else? Why do female characters always have to be rescued?
We no longer wanted to perpetuate these outdated gender roles, so we asked ourselves: “Mirror, mirror on the wall—who is the bravest of them all?” This question was the starting point for founding our children’s book publishing house, Fairy Tales Retold.
What are “Look & Find Books” all about?
Our customers love the illustrations in our fairy tales. That inspired us to create a world full of hidden details that invites children to search and discover, and in which Luna, our beloved real-life dog, is the secret star.
“Where's Luna?” is a “Look & Find Book Series” dedicated to our dog that showcases the diversity and magical places of the world. Each book invites readers to explore, search, and marvel.
The illustrations in our Look & Find Books are inspired by our fairy tales. Luna sets out on her own adventure and has to find certain things in each location – and of course, she needs your help! 😊 Every magical land she visits is based on real places and inspired by real elements from near and far.
What has been the response?
Parents, in particular, have responded overwhelmingly positively – often for a very personal reason: Many no longer read traditional fairy tales to their children, whether because of outdated portrayals of women, violence, or themes that are difficult to explain today. Others spontaneously alter the stories themselves as they read them aloud – improvising, searching for better words. That’s exactly what we take off their hands. “Fairy Tales Retold” gives parents fairy tales they can read aloud with a clear conscience – and gives children stories that truly resonate with them.
